About Hialeah Middle School

Hialeah Middle School, established in 1964 as Hialeah Junior High, rests on 21.8 acres of land in the City of Hialeah, Florida, located at 6027 East 7th Avenue. The school was converted to a middle school in 2003.  In 1998, Hialeah Middle School opened a new media center, three (3) computer labs, and three (3) instructional classrooms in a new wing adjacent to the existing facility. The school facility also includes seven (7) relocatable classrooms.  The majority of this community is composed primarily of single-family homes as well as a number of apartment buildings.   The school’s enrollment is highly representative of Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ diverse population. Hialeah Middle School’s 905 students are primarily Hispanic, comprising 92% of the student body.  Black students account for 5% of the student body.  Three percent are non-Hispanic Whites. Neither of these percentages are high enough to constitute an AYP subgroup.  Students with Disabilities (SWD) account for 18% of the student body.  Within this subgroup, 100 have Specific Learning Disabilities, six are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, four are Visually Impaired or Dual Sensory Impaired, five are Other Health Impaired, 17 have Autism Spectrum Disorders, and 26 have Intellectual Disabilities.  Eight percent of the students are in the Gifted program.  ELL’s account for 16% of the student body.  Sixty are in ESOL 1, 35 in ESOL 2, 33 in ESOL 3, and 16 in ESOL 4.  Currently, 86% of the student body qualifies for free or reduced lunch, and 84% of the students are Economically Disadvantaged (ED).

After earning, 493 accountability points on the 2009 FCAT and demonstrating increases in four of the eight accountability areas, Hialeah Middle School has continued to make progress toward improving the school grade.  The school is only two points shy of earning a “B.”  Struggling students making a year’s worth of progress increased by 1% in Reading and 8% in Mathematics.  The school also maintained an average student attendance rate over 95% for each of the four marking periods.
